Apple’s smartphones, tablets, watches and Macs are designed to work in unison. Everything is synced so you can easily jump between devices to stay productive through the day.
“Continuity” covers a family of Apple sync features. These include Handoff, Universal Clipboard, iPhone Cellular Calls, SMS/MMS messaging, Instant Hotspot and Auto Unlock. The idea is to make your transition between devices as seamless as possible. With this achieved, you can get straight back to work.
Handoff is one of the most useful in terms of productivity. It goes far beyond the basic sync features offered by some cloud services. To use Handoff and other Continuity features, each device must be signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID. Handoff must also be enabled in the settings. They also need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switched on.
Using Handoff, you can start reading a web page, writing an email or editing a document on one device and resume on another. And it goes much further. Native Apple apps that support Handoff include Mail, Maps, Safari, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts, Pages, Numbers and Keynote. It also works with a wide range of third-party apps.
When switching to your Mac, you’ll see available Handoff sessions from your other devices in the dock at the bottom of the screen. Alternatively, when switching to an iPhone or iPad, you’ll see available Handoff sessions at the bottom of the screen when you double tap the home button to open the multitasking screen.
Universal Clipboard feature
Meanwhile, the Universal Clipboard feature lets you copy text, images, photos and videos on one Apple device. You can then paste the content on another Apple device. It works automatically in the background, so when you copy content on one device it’s instantly available when you paste it on another device.
Instant Hotspot, iPhone Cellular Calls and SMS/MMS messaging make it easy to interact with your iPhone from your Mac, even when your phone is in your bag or pocket. It’s particularly useful when you’re working on the move, such as in a cafe, and you need to stay in contact.
Instant Hotspot eliminates the hassle of reaching for your iPhone when you need to connect your MacBook to the internet. Simply select your iPhone from the Mac’s dropdown Wi-Fi menu. It will automatically launch the iPhone’s Wi-Fi Hotspot and create a secure connection.
There is more. iPhone Cellular Calls and SMS/MMS messaging let you use your Mac like a phone, making and receiving calls and texts as if they came from the phone in your pocket. They make it easy to switch tasks without jumping between devices, making you more efficient so you can squeeze more out of your day
